Friendship Bracelet

Hi there! It's Tobi Crawford here and today I'm sharing a project on The Twinery Blog I've had in my head for a few days now. I don't know about you, but when I was younger I made a lot of friendship bracelets. I had a little organizers with all of my embroidery floss in perfect order (ROY. G. BIV of course) and I would sit and watch TV while I worked on my next project. It's funny but I commented on Instagram the other day that making a friendship bracelet was like riding a bike - I guess I did it so much that my body held on to the muscle-memory from 25+ years ago... Weird!!

I've also had these colours on the brain, so I pulled out: Solid Mandarin, Solid Carribean, Solid Cappuccino, Solid Charcoal, Solid Marigold, and Solid Natural. I did a simple stripe design, but there are literally hundreds of designs to choose from if you're wanting to be adventurous! (I always stuck with the basics, though!)

So this was my plan: find the perfect sentiment/image to go with my work in progress, get the bracelet started and then the recipient can finish it with the leftover twine:

(I loosely wrapped the remainder around the base layer for easy removal...)

I think it's neat that once my friend receives this card and finishes the bracelet it will be like this cool, collaborative, bonding thing we'll share and hopefully when she wears it she'll think of me! (I'm moving away soon so I'm finding myself a little sappy, lol...)
Thanks for joining me today, and hey, why don't you try dusting off those knot-making skills... I'd love to see your projects!

The inspiration has been amazing, and today you'll be even more astonished! If you missed the beginning of our journey, be sure to go back and check it out! MONDAY - TUESDAY - WEDNESDAY - THURSDAY

In preparation for our big move I've decided to do a mini reno of our kitchen. While I was painting the cupboards (Annie Sloan Chalkpaint in French Linen!) I had the bright idea to make one of the cupboards a chalkboard menu... Here she is:

I need some practicing on my chalkboard writing, but this was a project made easy with:

This shows the progression from beginning, to one coat, to two coats of black. After the black is dry I applied two coats of the clear chalkboard paint.

Are you wondering about those perfect pears? Aren't I a great artist?! Ha, I wish... Since the pen that I used to write on the board wipes off with water, I figured I could colour onto the stamp, "huff" on it before I stamped and it would work.. I was right!!

This way, I can stamp anything I want on the board and all I have to do is wipe away with a wet cloth!! Cool, right?!

Of course, there are prizes! DecoArt is sending three sets of their Media Fluid Acrylics, Princeton Artist Brushes via inspired by Willow Wolfe is donating Select 3750 Brushes and some Catalyst Wedges, and we'll be adding a Stampendous Creative Palette so you can practice all the techniques you'll see this week. We'll be sending three prize packages to commenters with U.S. Mailing Addresses, and DecoArt will be sending three generous sample packages to international commenters, so all our friends can play.

Stampendous! and DecoArt

2014_06_decoart

The excitement continues as we lead you on a world tour of amazing artists playing with Stampendous, DecoArt, and Princeton Artist Brushes via inspired by Willow Wolfe products together! You'll be amazed at what they've created! If you missed the beginning of our journey, be sure to go back and check it out! MONDAY - TUESDAY - WEDNESDAY

Today I decided to alter a cheap iPhone 5 case. I saw them in Fred Meyer and they were the most boring things I've ever seen, but they were a blank canvas... Literally.

So I set off priming it with DecoArt White Gesso. It covered nicely, and serves as a great base for other paints to go on top! (Just so you know, their Gesso is like Liquitex's Super Heavy Gesso.. It's thick and luscious!

I sponged a bunch of stencils on like so:

I used the All-Surface Acrylic paints and FREE stencil from this stamp set: Cling Jumbo Leaves

A little doodling and it's finished off in the back:

And here's the front and inside:

A Big Move

The biggest move of our lives is about to take place...

I'm scared but excited...

My life will forever be changed

once we move to...................

You read that right! My husband, son (aged 12), my weenie dog and I will be making the huge move to Shanghai, China. What?!?!?!?!

I don't know if you've noticed that my blog has been a little slow over the past few months, but my family has been dealing with some pretty heavy issues. Then, in the middle of dealing with everything I was called up by my principal to say that because of budget cuts I was going to be laid-off of 60% of my teaching contract. This is from a school that I've taught at for 6 years and a place where I've built the choral program up from virtual extinction to bursting at the seams... But, $$ talks and when push comes to shove the non-choral (band) classes I taught were trimmed down to one teacher and I was let go.

Literally, the night my principal called me I was in bed surfing on my phone and thought I would search: Teaching Abroad. I was at once amazed, excited, and optimistic about my future. The next day I updated my resume and applied for 20-30 jobs all over the globe. Places from arctic Canada to Mauritius, to, well, China. After I applied for the jobs there was a long wait. I stalked my email inbox for 3-4 weeks until I got a first interview with Sino-Canada High School. The interview (skype) went well and I didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks so I thought it was over until I got an email saying I had a second interview with the principal. (Yay!) The interview went very well and during the conversation I mentioned my husband was a teacher too and would also be looking for work. The principal asked if my husband would want an interview, RIGHT NOW, and he was game! A few days later we were both offered contracts, I am going to teach musical theatre, and Ian will teach middle school...

Crazy, right? So we'll be leaving in 2 months and in the meantime I am up to my ears in preparations for a move... We're selling our house, our car, putting most of our stuff into storage, farming out two animals... It's a lot of work, BUT, I will be taking a fair amount of my crafting supplies with me, I mean, I'm moving to China, I'm not dying, lol... I will have to drop one design team, but other than that, I will be back to normal in September!!

So for now, I will be posting until August then I will for real need to pack and ship all of my stuff to China, I just won't be posting as often! Any hints/recommendations are welcomed with open arms. Please let me know if you've made a move to a far-off land and what you did to make things easier.. I am relying heavily on advice to make this move as smooth as possible!

Stampendous and Core'dinations Blog Hop!

2014_06_coredinations

Hope you've enjoyed the terrific collaboration between Stampendous products and Core'dinations' gorgeous papers! We have been thrilled to bring it to you! Today is the final day!!

I decided to use another one of their already-embossed papers, this time in a fresh green called "Mantis."

I have been lazy lately with my background papers but my Core'dinations projects this week have reminded me that an embossed background (or some other kind of special treatment goes a long way to spicing up the card.

I coloured the image, Bouquet Kiddo with Copic markers then fussy-cut her out. Look at those green eyes!! (Fun fact: did you know that only 1-2% of the entire world population has green eyes? I have 'em and man I am lucky!!)

Last detail: the sentiment. Did you know there were a couple of sentiment sets that are designed to coordinate with the Stack Art? I love them because they are so versatile and are full of staples.. This particular stamp set is called: Regal Bird Quotes

Of course there are prizes!

We'll give away three packs of goodness! The official rules are HERE. You still need a U.S. mailing address to win, but we sure want to hear your comments anyway! You have until the end of Sunday, June 15th to finish your comments. If you missed any previous posts here they are for TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, and THURSDAY. We'll draw three random blog posts from all the posts this week. Then we'll choose one comment from each. Here's who is posting today!

Stampendous and Core'dinations

2014_06_coredinations

Love all the inspiration we're seeing using Stampendous Stamps with Core'dinations' gorgeous papers! The texture and amazing colors just pop! We're happy to be partnering with them for this week of terrific designer projects!

I stamped Friends Cup Stamp in Grey Flannel Memento Luxe Ink and fussy-cut it out. Did you notice a little shadow around the mug? I added a little shading with a grey chalk pencil and blended it out with a blending stump. Subtle, but it gives it a little dimension!

I decided to play with some Spotted Core'dinations cardstock in grey. I sanded it and distressed the edges to reveal the core colour and it served as the base colour for my whole design:

Yes, there are prizes! We'll give away three prize packs of products! The official rules are HERE. You need a U.S. mailing address to win, but we sure want to hear your comments anyway! We'll draw the winners Monday, June 16th so you have until the end of the weekend to comment. In case you missed the earlier posts, here's TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY (we skipped Monday). It's time once again for another SRM Challenge, and this month the theme is: Summer! I was looking through my stamps wanting to use something that's never seen ink and I found the perfect thing for this challenge... Check it out:

I had the sentiment picked out first (Sticker Sentiments - Summer) and thought this HappyHoppers stamp went perfectly with the sentiment.

I coloured him with Spectrum Noir pens and although I'm still getting used to the colours, I am loving how they blend. If you're wondering, I give them "two thumbs up"!

Handmade Journal

One day while I was Pinning I happened upon a great tutorial for making mini-books and then didn't think of it again... That was until I saw the maker of the tutorial (Cheri Piles) in a LSS and got to thumb through all of her amazing work. Colour me inspired!!!

I went home and made this:

I went with a real mixed media-looking cover and used a lot of silver to glam it up.

I used molding paste through a tear-shaped stencil then covered it with various paints and ink sprays.

I used some DecoArt Metallic Lustre (similar to Inca Gold) on a few wood veneer pieces and stamped Technique Tuesday's May Day Greenhouse Stamp Set in Versamark then embossed with silver EP.

I filled the inside with heavy white cardstock to allow whomever gets this to journal to use some heavier mediums, if they wish. I put a piece of patterned paper as sort of a cover page and DONE!

Thanks for stopping by and make sure you head to Cheri's blog for the tutorial!

Naughty Or Nice Challenge: MEN!

It's time again for another fun Naughty Or Nice challenge and this month it's all about the men!

It's the perfect time to get a few Father's Day cards done. If there's one thing I've learned about giving cards to guys: they appreciate a no-fuss card with some fun detail. (They like to try to figure it out.. lol)

So I thought I would go with a clichè tie theme and have a little fun with it.

So I began by stamping a single tie image on green a whole bunch of times. I outlined the ties with a light grey alcohol marker and got to work decorating those ties!

I used a white gel pen and tried to come up with as many silly/funny tie patterns I could think of.

No muss, no fuss with this card. I know someone like my Dad would love this!

Challenge Rules and Guidelines:
  • You can simply add the URL link from your project after it has been uploaded to your online craft gallery. If you upload your card to an online craft gallery, please use the keyword NON5 so we can check out your beautiful work! You can also use online photo-sharing sites like Flickr to share your photos too!
  • Please mention and link back to this post to let people know about this fun challenge!
  • Whether you are Naughty or Nice, we sure would appreciate cards made especially for this challenge, but if you really, really want to, please link a card that fits NO MORE THAN 5  CHALLENGES including ours! *changed it to allow more people to play along!!
  • You have until the 25th of each month to submit your creations and then the DT will pick two winners, one for both Naughty and Nice
