The Twinery and Serendipity Stamps Blog Hop

We are excited to be back again today here at The Twinery, joining up with Serendipity Stamps for a wonderful 3-day blog hop! Designers from both design teams will delight you with projects created using our fabulous baker’s twine and a variety of products from Serendipity Stamps
You should have arrived here from: Jeanne Jachna's blog!

Today I've coloured up the beautiful Daylily stamp from Serendipity Stamps:

As usual I sought inspiration from the internet and used this photo as my inspiration for the colours. I used Spectrum Noir markers to colour the image and a black chalk pencil with blending stump to add shadows.

I love using the chalk pencil to add shadows that make the image seem 3-d. It's all about the parts of the image that overlap - add a shadow and it makes them pop!

I also added a lot of texture to the card using various techniques, one being embossing the patterned paper. It's not obvious, but it's a neat tactile detail that's easy to do!
The Twinery Twine used is Matte Black Shimmer

And as if the inspiration isn’t enough – you can also win a fabulous Sampler Pack of Solid Twines:

The Twinery and PoppyStamps Blog Hop

Welcome to another fabulous event here at The Twinery! Our designers are so excited to welcome the designers of Poppystamps as we bring you three days of creativity & inspiration.
I bet you will not be surprised to see what dies I have chosen for today's project...
Ever since I've picked up this little die (Dachshund) I thought about pairing it with the Antique Lamp Post and doing kind of a, dog-on-the-town sort of scene. I just love die cutting in black and making a silhouette scene, it's so easy and the end product is so sharp.

What a cute way to say "I miss you," am I right?? I wrapped some Solid Pink Sorbet around the sentiment panel to bring out some colour from the background. That's the thing with using black as the focal colour - almost any other colour from the papers you use can be highlighted as a secondary colour!

Both companies are giving away some pretty fabby prizes and all you have to do is stop by each designer’s blog & leave a comment.
Wanna know what YOU could win?!?

You Make My Heart Smile!

Have you heard about the changes at Technique Tuesday? Ali Edwards will no longer be partnering with TT and instead of the Studio AE program they have introduced Memory Keepers Studio! Each month we release a new Memory Keepers Studio™ stamp set. If you would like to receive these stamp sets each month, consider becoming a member of the Memory Keepers Studio autoship program. Members enjoy discounts, exclusive special offers, plus free shipping on additional products.

This is July's set:

The flower stamp I used is from the Family Flair stamp set.
And check out that cool sentiment strip! I cut a piece of white cardstock and then stamped on top with one of the phrases from Technique Tuesday's I Like You stamp set. I sure love that two-toned look.

That's all for now... Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Dad

Well my dear ol' dad turns 64 today and he's quite excited about becoming a senior citizen next year, but unfortunately there's nothing special about turning. 64.... I thought I would make him a card that makes him feel old though, just to get in the mood ;).

I played along with this week's Paper Smooches Sparks Challenge and it was a great inspiration to me. I grabbed my watercolors and swiped some green stripes across and yah, that's it!! I did a little paper piecing with the Boob Tubes stamp set and was excited that I had some enamel dots that fit perfectly!! So happy birthday Dad, and I hope you have a great weekend!

July Challenges!

It's a double entendre: July has brought a lot of interesting challenges my way, AND I have managed to squeeze in a few challenges! So yay me! I have been busy teaching mixed media and card classes at various stores in my province, getting ready for our move to China, packing, getting dental work wrapped up before my insurance expires... Geez, what else can I fit in there? To say July has been a challenge is an understatement, but the reason I did not pack up my craft stuff is I love to steal away from LIFE and just get messy sometimes...

So in my mixed media classes (hello to my new friends!!) I've been talking about how to not waste paint, sprays, gesso etc, by handing out book pages to "smoosh" their leftovers onto. Today's project shows you how you could use one such page!

  1. I had some extra modelling paste on my palette so I scraped it through a stencil onto this book page.

  2.  I watered down some Gesso and spread a thin layer onto the page.

  3.  Then I sprayed a few Dylusions Ink Sprays onto the top of the page and followed that with some sprays of water.

  4.   I mopped up the leftover mist with more book pages!

   5.    I chose some coordinating Gelatos.

   6.   I spread the colours onto the paper and blended them with a baby wipe.

   7.   Card-making time!!

I added a lot of different elements in black and white as to not take away from the bright colours of the background. That's always a go-to technique in my book! (I used a sticker from Take 2 - Wedding and mounted it on black glitter paper)

This card is for two challenges:

  1. The SRM Challenge: July Theme - Wedding Shower. As you will see from the next picture, this is actually a glassine bag, so invitation information, maps, RSVPs etc can all get tucked inside. (this would even make a great card to accompany a wedding gift!)
  2. The 200th Case Study Challenge - I used this week's sketch for my layout and I'm sure glad I did.. I would never have thought to put that little element on the top left corner... Always great inspiration from this challenge!!
Here's the back of the bag:

All we ask is the you use ONLY SRM Stickers and Products but you can also use SRM in combination with your own stamps, papers, die cuts and so on!

Our rules (to keep this fun and fair):

1.  Only SRM product is permitted but you can combine with any stamps, paper, die cuts, etc.

2.  Please comment on the project ahead of you and behind you in the link.  Everyone LOVES comments!

3.  You can link to other challenges - there is no limit.

4.  Anything that is offensive or does not follow our guidelines will be removed.

5.  Have fun!

Art Journal Play

So all week I've been preparing (mostly mentally) for my upcoming weekend at Crafty Capers, where I will be teaching an all-day intro to art journalling. I've drafted a loooooong list of topics I want to cover and thought I would work through a few of them.. Here are a couple of pages I will share this weekend:

A lot of what I tried to demonstrate with these pages is what a few great stencils in your stash can do. They really are so fun to work with and I am giddy every time I acquire a new one!!

Stencils Used:
Crafters Workshop: Stick Flowers, Love Post, Striped Leaves, Rosetta
Stamps: Dylusions by Ranger

Upcoming Classes!

So I've been terribly busy with getting my house ready to put on the market and it is such a relief to say that IT'S DONE! It's never looked so good (I certainly couldn't live this clean all the time) but it's attracting buyers, so that's good!

I am on the road quite a bit this month teaching a bunch of exciting classes, so if you're local to these places I'd love to see you! Classes are almost full (and I think they might be sold out in Nanaimo) so call ASAP!!

Vancouver Island/Nanaimo
The Art of Journaling: A Comprehensive Mixed Media Workshop
Saturday July 12 9:30 - 4:00 pm includes a 30 minute break for lunch
Cost: $81
Instructor: Tobi Crawford
What is the with this trend of Art Journals and Mixed Media? And what do those terms even mean?? Art Journalling is different for for each person and there are as many techniques as there are artists on the planet, BUT, there are quite a few techniques that every art journaller considers staples in their "bag of tricks" and we will work through many of them. I will be using a lot of different mediums and tools to allow you to discover what your thing is, and will hopefully shed the light on what "Mixed Media" and more importantly, "Art Journalling" means for you. You will be asked to bring materials such as: acrylic paint, Dylusions Ink Sprays, glimmer mists, stencils, stamps, gelatos, Pitt Pens, but if you do not have something, I will have plenty to share!

Watercolour Wonders with My Favourite Things
Sunday July 13 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Cost: $37
Instructor: Tobi Crawford
A great love of mine is colouring and I love to share tips and tricks with people who are curious about: shading, light source, contrast, and blending and we will be using the very user-friendly medium of watercolour markers to explore those topics. Once we are done with our colouring masterpieces we will make four super-cute cards that will showcase all of your hard work!! I used a combination of Tombow and Distress Markers for watercolouring, along with a waterpen. Please feel free to bring any watercolour markers you have and make sure you have a waterpen! You will also receive a list of basic cardmaking tools to bring.

Mixed Media: Dylusions

Tobi Crawford has been teaching craft-related classes for more than 6 years (in addition to being a high school music teacher!) and works for companies such as: Technique Tuesday, Stampendous!, The Twinery, SRM Stickers and many more. During this session Tobi will focus on various ways to incorporate Dylusions Ink Sprays into your art journalling and stencils, gesso, stamps will be just some of the materials you will get to play with. We will go for 2.5 hours and get as many pages and techniques done as we can - there's no limit!

Naughty Or Nice: Mixed Media

It's our 6th challenge already at Naughty or Nice and I was thinking about this month's challenge as I was setting up my temporary craft-space and I now have two "zones", card-making, and mixed media. I think a lot of us are spending a little more $$ on paints and sprays and gesso etc, and I thought we should have a challenge to share all of our mixed media wonders!

Here are my cards using drips from watercolor paints and this month's Greenhouse Society stamp set

Yes they are different!! I splatted on a large piece of paper and cut out what I needed. It's always fun to make cards with this method - you never know what you're gonna get! ;)

So what do we mean by Naughty or Nice? Well, take a look at your sentiment stamps - are there any in your collection that are kind of "off-color" or a little bit racy? Pair them with a seemingly innocent image and BAM! You've succeeded in being naughty. But for those of you who cannot find a devilish stamp that fits the bill, no worries - you could be nice and post a card with our theme and you will be fulfilling our challenge parameters too!

Challenge Rules and Guidelines:
  • You can simply add the URL link from your project after it has been uploaded to your online craft gallery. If you upload your card to an online craft gallery, please use the keyword NON6 so we can check out your beautiful work! You can also use online photo-sharing sites like Flickr to share your photos too!
  • Please mention and link back to this post to let people know about this fun challenge!
  • Whether you are Naughty or Nice, we sure would appreciate cards made especially for this challenge, but if you really, really want to, please link a card that fits NO MORE THAN 5  CHALLENGES including ours! *changed it to allow more people to play along!!
  • You have until the 25th of each month to submit your creations and then the DT will pick two winners, one for both Naughty and Nice
