Deep Thoughts By Tobi...

It has been a long time since I've coloured with my Copic markers, my friends. I've lost a few subscribers lately and I wonder if that's why?? I think a good blogger (teacher, wife, mother, HUMAN) has to constantly be evaluating oneself to make sure they're being the best they can be. In the last year-or-so I've really come to love and treasure my mixed media work. I get something different out of it than I do card-making and the practical side of me says: Do I really need to make 100s of cards every year that I don't send (because I don't send them to anyone!) and realistically don't sell??? Mixed media and art journalling is different - it's self-contained in a journal or it's functional, like on a canvas on a wall. Deep thoughts...

All that to say I still really love colouring and making cards, I am perhaps just being too practical. Maybe it was when we started packing for our move to China that I started to come face-to-face with how many cards I had. Literally thousands.. It's sickening. Art journals? A few, and each one is like flipping through a little book of my life. I brought a butt-load of stuff to China and I actually really like my little craft area and it's breathed a new life into me creativity-wise.

I finally unearthed my Copic markers and had an actual, real thought that I might not be as good as I once was... OH THE HORROR!!!! But I grabbed a cute little image and coloured her up like I've taught countless thousands of people to do and it worked!! And I had fun!!

I searched around the interweb for a challenge that inspired me and I saw Teri's Fabulous Friday post and was like, YES!

This is Whatcha' Doin' from Tiddly Inks and it's a digital stamp so it was only $3!! I need to buy a printer so I can buy some more, cause these stamps are adorable!!

The background was made by dropping various Izinks by Clearsnap... I love those things: cool colours in a neat little glass bottle with a dropper. What's not to love? lol..

Anyway... Thanks for reading my rant, and checking out my card!
Have a great day!

48 Weeks Art Journal Update

Before I left for China I was able to get a few weeks of lessons from Donna Downey's 48 Weeks class completed, and I've got one more done while here. I am loving this class, I just wish I had more room to get messy... This book is HUGE!!!

Mmmmm... Purple and green. It's like magic to me lately!

This collage-style page is one of my favourites... This is a style I never thought I could do.

This is pretty much my "word of the year" so I figured I would put it in writing... There are a lot of layers to this one and lots of texture in real life.

I toiled over this girl's face and I think it turned out great... I love this one!

Another face! lol... But this one originated from Stampendous' versatile stamp (Blossom Beauty), so I had a lot to go from.

This is the last page I completed and it was fun to just play with colour and a few new products too! (See Molotow Markers in my "haul" video)

Get Well Very Soon

One of my all-time favourite card "idols" (Debby Hughes) is this month's muse at the Case Study blog and I just had to play along with at least one challenge... This week's card is beautiful in it's simplicity (like all of Debby's cards...) and the colour palette is soft and lovely..

Here's her card:

And here's my take on it:

I went with kind of a wood theme and used a number of different stamps to make this little beauty... Here goes:
1. Sentiment - Technique Tuesday So Grateful
2. Woodgrain backgroound - Heidi Swapp
3. Circle Script - Dina Wakley
4. Feathers - Hero Arts

Some wood dots from My Mind's Eye and a little twine added some subtle accents to finish it off...
I love how it turned out. Thanks for the inspiration, Debby!

Technique Tuesday Blog Hop

Technique Tuesday decided hey, why not have a little blog hop just for the fun of it?

And because it's September.

So do you ever start a new chapter in your life and have all these cool resolutions that you're going to do while in that new chapter??? Well my resolution is Project Life: China. I even bought a Canon Selphy so I can print out photos!!

So here goes:

There is so much to see in Shanghai, especially if you're not from an Asian country. Everything is a new sight to see. I can't wait for our week-long holiday coming up because we plan to go downtown every day! Tourists in our new city...

I used a great new set called Best Place along with Going Places to help embellish some of the cards.

There are some great stamps that serve as journalling prompts, which I particularly appreciate ;).

So guess what? I'm giving away Best Place!!

All you have to do is comment before midnight (EST) on the 20th and I'll draw a name. If you're trying to do the PL thing I know you'll love this set. But I also made a card with it too!

Want to win some other prizes?? Check out my friend's blogs!!

I'm Alive! And I Made a Card!

I don't know about you, but moving really sucks the mojo out of me! Especially when it's a huge move like we just made!! But things are good here in China, all of my stuff made it in one piece and I've been getting my little craft-zone organized little-by-little. I still have to make a run to one of the Ikeas in Shanghai (there are three!!!!) to get some essential organization pieces, but otherwise, I like my set-up.. I'll post a tour of our little apartment in the next little while...

Now, onto the card!!
It's time for a new SRM Challenge and if you didn't know, there are four elements to choose from and you can mix and match what you want to use, so I chose to use the sketch and the colour combo:

I started off by scraping some DecoArt Black Modeling Paste through a stencil. I wasn't worried about getting it smooth and perfect because I wanted lots of texture and bumps... Isn't the coolest stuff??

All we ask is the you use ONLY SRM Stickers and Products but you can also use SRM in combination with your own stamps, papers, die cuts and so on!

Our rules (to keep this fun and fair):

1.  Only SRM product is permitted but you can combine with any stamps, paper, die cuts, etc.

2.  Please comment on the project ahead of you and behind you in the link.  Everyone LOVES comments!

3.  You can link to other challenges - there is no limit.

4.  Anything that is offensive or does not follow our guidelines will be removed.

5.  Have fun!

Prize Package:

The winner will receive a Prize Package from the SRM Online Store.  We will also be recognizing some honorable mentions!
